Background: Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are computer-generated simulations of a real environment. This study aimed to explore dental faculty members’ perspectives and experiences regarding the use of AR and VR in dental education.
Methods and Materials: The present qualitative study was conducted from January to April 2023 using a phenomenological approach. Twelve faculty members of Rafsanjan Dental School were selected through purposive sampling. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed the same day. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. To ensure the accuracy and credibility of the findings, participants were asked to review the initial coded data. Qualitative data were analyzed via thematic analysis using MAXQDA software version 10 in two phases.
Results: Five main themes and fourteen pertaining subthemes emerged from analyzing the interviews: 1) Improving education quality: comprehensive education, equity-oriented teaching, and the provision of innovative services. 2) Tailoring education to student needs: using modern teaching tools and training skilled dental professionals. 3) Establishing educational infrastructure: curriculum planning, technology-enhanced teaching, and intelligent management. 4) Neglecting future educational needs: motivational challenge, infrastructural barriers, and a lack of understanding of real-world conditions. 5) Empowering learners: skill enhancement, enhanced learning, and sustained learning.
Conclusion: Faculty experiences suggest that AR and VR can enhance educational quality, better align dental education with societal needs, and empower students. To optimize their implementation, robust infrastructure and smart educational management are essential. Addressing current challenges through strategic planning can reduce obstacles and facilitate the effective integration of these technologies in dental education
