Abstract

Background: Increasing the awareness of healthcare providers as a kind of cooperation in different parts of the Ministry of Health can lead to the promotion of oral health in certain groups of society. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of educational intervention on the referral of oral health target groups by healthcare providers in Zahedan health centers.
Methods & Materials: To conduct this quasi-experimental interventional study; coordination was made with the health center of Zahedan. The coefficient of agreement before and after the training, was reported as 0.120 and 0.600, respectively. Examinations of 100 pregnant women and children in the center, were done first by a dental student and after obtaining consent, by the oral healthcare providers, in normal ambient light, ordinary chair and with wooden tongue depressor. The examinations performed by both examiners were under the same conditions but in two separate rooms. After the first examination, two-hour theoretical and practical training for healthcare providers was conducted. One week after training, the examinations of the new patients continued according to the procedure performed in the first turn. Finally, the "correct referral" and "incorrect referral" of the healthcare provider before and after the intervention were analyzed and compared by SPSS19 software.
Results: The frequency of correct referral of children after the intervention (74%) is significantly higher than before the intervention (54%). The frequency of correct referral of pregnant mothers after the intervention (80%) is significantly higher than before the intervention (44%). There was no agreement between the healthcare providers and the dentist regarding the referral of children and pregnant women before the intervention, but the agreement was significant after the intervention.
Conclusions: The training of oral healthcare providers had a significant effect on the correct referral of children and pregnant mothers.
